A Memorial Service to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the 1979 Fastnet Race will be held today, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 at Holy Trinity Church, Cowes at 1730.
The church is situated behind the Royal Yacht Squadron.
Andrew McIrvine, Commodore of the Royal Ocean Racing Club who participated in the 1979 race commented: "This year is of course an important anniversary, 30 years since the infamous event in 1979. Although it was the worst catastrophe in our history, an enormous amount was learned. The lessons have been applied and explain some of the restrictions placed upon competitors, which are necessary for safe passage to and from 'the rock'. The Rolex Fastnet Race is a personal challenge for everyone taking part."
