The centenary edition of Rolex Fastnet Race may not have the same fearsome edge as the previous two races, but in many ways the test has been no less exacting. Crews have been forced to draw deep on a myriad of skills, including persistence, tenacity and tactical awareness. Complex tides, varied winds, and intense competition have brought out the best in all those taking part.
The first trophies have been secured, with Monohull line honours going to the 30.5 metre (100 foot) Black Jack 100, which completed the 695nm course in two days, 12 hours, 31 minutes and 21 Seconds.
The previous morning, SVR Lazartigues, the 32m (105 foot) trimaran, became the first Multihull to finish in a time of one day, 17 hours, 18 minutes and four seconds. The Rolex Fastnet Race is organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club and has been partnered by Rolex since 2001. The quarter-century partnership represents a significant element within the brand’s wider relationship with yachting which began almost 70 years ago.
