Ultimes Threaten #RolexFastnetRace Record Destruction! ⏱🚀 - Unless there is a flat calm, it is very likely that the outright record will fall in this August’s edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s premium event, the Rolex Fastnet Race. For leading the charge in the world’s biggest offshore yacht race, with a fleet of 300-350 competing, will be the world’s fastest offshore boats – the Ultimes. - The Rolex Fastnet Race starting from Cowes, UK on Saturday 3 August will give Thomas Coville a chance to test his new Sodebo Ultim 3. - Coville is remarkable for having competing in almost every major sailing event from the America’s Cup and Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race (winning with Groupama 4) to the Mini, IMOCA 60, ORMA 60 and for more than a decade in giant multihulls, on which in 2016 he set a new solo round the world record (later broken by Gabart). - Read the full story over at rorc.org. - #rorcracing 📸 @sodebovoile . . . #yachting #yachts #superyachts #yachtrace #ocean #waves #water #sail #sailing #sea #sun #offshore #oceanwater #superyachts #supermaxi #sodebo #france #rolex #ultime #multihull #breaking #fastnet #plymouth #boat #travel #windy #summer #travel

Images from the final day of racing at the RORC Vice Admirals Cup. - Despite what initially appeared to be an unpromising forecast, six to eight races were completed in each of the eight classes, in winds varying from five knots to a squall of more than 20. - #rorcracing #rorcvac 📸 Rick Tomlinson

Day 2 of the RORC Vice Admiral’s Cup sees four testing races in varied conditions. - It was day of intensely close racing in a very shifty north-northwesterly breeze of mostly 10-15 knots, but with a number of lighter spells and a brief squall that saw gusts above 20 knots. - “Today was really enjoyable with great racing and good courses set in tricky conditions,” said Christopher Daniel whose J/122e Juno is leading the Performance 40 class. “It was a big challenge to make sure we stayed in phase with the 20-25 degree wind shifts, but it was champagne sailing. We came ashore with big smiles.” - In the first race of the day for the Quarter Ton class, Sam Laidlaw’s Aguila, Louise Morton’s Bullet and Tony Hayward’s Blackfun lined up together at the start, but just before the gun Aguila and Blackfun bore away hard, leaving Bullet as a premature starter two lengths ahead. At the finish Julian Metherewell’s Bullit held a lead of 18 seconds on yesterday’s winner, Ian Southworth’s Protis, although this reduced to just eight seconds after time correction. Morton finished seven seconds behind Southworth to take third on the water and on corrected time. - However, Metherewell was not able to repeat his early performance in the following races, where he took third, fifth and ninth places. By contrast, Morton notched up a pair of wins and a second place to take the overall lead one point ahead of Southworth, with a discard applied. - In the first three races today Glyn Locke’s Farr 280 Toucan asserted dominance in the HP30 class, with a 2, 1, 5 scoreline to take a slender overall lead. However, he started prematurely in the final race of the day, despite attempting to duck behind the line before the gun. He hadn’t recovered by the end of the first lap, rounding the leeward gate before even hoisting the jib. Nevertheless he had an impressively fast second lap, finishing second on the water, a length ahead of Malcolm Wootton’s Farr 30 Pegasus. - Read the full race report via the link in our bio. - #rorcracing #rorcvac 📸 Rick Tomlinson

The opening day of the Vice Admiral's Cup served up light airs, with big shifts and wind reversals that challenged competitors and race officials alike. - A quiet morning quickly gave way to an afternoon that started with fast-paced action on both course areas. - Todays provisional results can be found at: http://www.rorc.org/racing/race-results/2019-results - Tomorrow promises a more consistent north-north westerly breeze! - #rorcracing #rorcvac 📸 Rick Tomlinson

"It was amazing - an awesome experience!” - Ed Fishwick's British FAST40+ Redshift wins RORC Cervantes Trophy Race. - A bitter northerly wind, with squalls gusting over 30 knots, produced a challenging race for the impressive fleet of 108 boats. Starting from the Squadron Line, the fleet headed east out of the Solent passing No Man's Land Fort and into the open waters of the English Channel. - After passing south of the Nab Channel, the fleet headed east, blast reaching to Owers, followed by an upwind leg to Littlehampton Outfall. Cracking sheets and hoisting downwind sails, the fleet headed south for a 77 mile dead-run across the English Channel. An energy sapping upwind leg of over 20 miles, from Cussy Buoy to the A5 Buoy, further tested the fleet, before a downwind section to the finish. - Ed Fishwick's maiden offshore race in British FAST40+ Redshift winning the 2019 RORC Cervantes Trophy Race. With a top class crew including Hannah Diamond and Dave Swete from the Volvo Ocean Race, along with Figaro skipper Nick Cherry. Redshift completed the 160nm course in just under 15 hours taking Line Honours and the overall win after IRC time correction. Lars & Birgitta Elfverson's Swedish Ker 40 Keronimo was second overall. Dutch Ker 46 Van Uden, skippered by Gerd-Jan Poortman, was third. - #rorcracing 📸 Rick Tomlinson . . . #sailing #rating #offshore #yachts #boats #yachtrace #yachting #instasail #waves #ocean #sea #boat #sails #spinnaker #sun #windy #water #inshoresailing #harbour #sailinglife #sailaway #canon #france #boating #nautica #marina #superyacht #lehavre

Race for line honours! The #RolexFastnetRace ‘double’ is long overdue. - While the main kudos in the Rolex Fastnet Race comes from class wins or ultimately the Fastnet Challenge Cup for the overall @ircrating winner, who will simply be first home to Plymouth often turns into an engaging, heavyweight bout. - Among the monohull contenders this year, in one corner is the Hong Kong newcomer - Seng Huang Lee’s 100ft Scallywag, skippered by Australian David Witt with a crew featuring many of the sailors from their Volvo Ocean Race campaign. In the other is George David’s familiar Juan K-designed Rambler 88, a boat that has been tweaked to within an inch of its life by its fastidious crew including many former Alinghi/Team New Zealand America’s Cup heroes. - For @scallywaghk, the Rolex Fastnet Race will be one of the pinnacles amid a major trophy hunting season that kicks off in the Caribbean at the @sailingweekantigua and follows with the Antigua Bermuda Race, and then the historic Transatlantic Race 2019 from Newport, RI to Cowes via the Lizard. Post Fastnet Scallywag heads for the Med. - One of the Rolex Fastnet Race’s most faithful competitors, George David and Rambler 88, return for a fifth time in the hope of achieving a result they deserve finally. As David states: “Too often we have been bridesmaid, which could be what brings us back along with the great traditions and scenery of this classic race.” And this is despite David coming close to losing his life when in 2011 his Rambler 100 lost its keel and capsized after rounding the Fastnet Rock, leaving him in the water drifting away from the boat. In that race David says they were on track to break the record, which ultimately went to the Ian Walker-skippered VO70, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing with a time of 1d 18h 39m 00s, the present monohull race record, while Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard set the ‘maxi’ record of 1d 20h 09m 47s. - #rorcracing . . . #yachting #yachts #superyachts #yachtrace #ocean #waves #water #sail #sailing #sea #sun #offshore #oceanwater #superyachts #supermaxi #maxiyachts #far100 #rolex #imoca60 #multihull #record #breaking #fastnet #plymouth #boat #travel #summer #travel

Premature summer – 1, Easter Challenge – 0 . In one of those aberrations that occasionally afflicts our weather-dependent sport, beautiful summery conditions and record temperatures blessed the Solent but sadly permitted the race committee to hold no racing for the entire three day duration of the RORC Easter Challenge. . “Normally Easter is a pretty tough event with a huge variety of conditions, but to have this high pressure system sitting over us just doesn’t work for sailing,” observed Eddie Warden Owen, who aside from being CEO of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, has been putting his skills as an ex-America’s Cup coach to good use at this event that traditionally doubles as the club’s UK season opener and as its unique coaching regatta. . “The race management team has tried to be patient and do the best they can, but despite the cold water temperature and the hot temperature on the land, the northeasterly gradient has stopped any sea breeze from developing. So it is unfortunate - disappointing for everyone.” . While there was a lot of waiting around, competitors’ time was not entirely lost. On the water today there was wasn’t adequate or stable enough breeze to hold a race, but there was just enough for the race committee to lay on some practice starts. . Ashore the debriefs up at the RORC Cowes clubhouse, led by coaching guru Jim Saltonstall were, as usual, standing room-only affairs, with Saltonstall providing his insights into “the world’s hardest sport” ably assisted by the team from @north_sails who provided analysis of drone footage from some of the practice starts that took place. . On Saturday they were assisted by rules expert Bill Edgerton who gave his opinions on some of the trickier rules scenarios for example on the start line - giving time for a windward yacht to keep clear – and, the frequently controversial calls from boats trying to get out of the tide on the Solent – asking for room to tack. . #rorcracing #rorceasterchallenge 📸 James Tomlinson/Rick Tomlinson/Paul Wyeth
