The 5th boat built by Sodebo, the 3rd Ultim of the series, and the largest multihull racing in the #RolexFastnetRace. - Owned by sponsor Sodebo and sailed by Thomas Coville, Sodebo Ultim was launched in March this year with this race being their first competitive outing. - Skipper Thomas has sailed with Sodebo for 20 years; he holds the world sailing record on a multihull and finished 3rd in the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe this year with the last Sodebo Ultim. - This is by no means his first Fastnet Race “I have participated many times, especially in younger days during the Admiral’s Cup. The start will be the most challenging part for us,” says Thomas. “We are looking forward to competing against other Ultims offshore in one of the most famous and popular races in the world.” - 📸 @sodebo / @sodebovoile

Owner of the oldest boat in the race, Paul Moxon fell in love with the 50ft Shepherd-designed 1939 classic yawl Amokura 1939 which he bought in the Med seven years ago. - She was originally built as a speedy vessel, suitable for both cruising and ocean racing, designed for Major Ernest Harston, ADC to Lord Mountbatten. The yacht has a rich history and previous owners include well-known author George Miller, whose book Maquis chronicled his exploits in WW2 behind enemy lines. With the profits, he went on to buy Amokura and wrote extensively about her in his book Oyster River, describing a summer spent cruising in the Gulf of Morbihan in the early 1960s. - Competing in the popular Two Handed division with Steve Jones, Moxon says he is more experienced sailing shorthanded than with a full crew: - “I thought it was a great challenge to take an old boat on the Fastnet. It is a huge mountain for us to climb, but we are more experienced doing it with just two as I have no experience of running a race crew,” says Moxon who has notched up hundreds of long-distance cruising miles, crossing with the boat to the Med many times. “There is nothing like having to prepare for a race of this magnitude to drive us to make the boat better, to learn about the boat, us as crew, and how to sail her better. The challenge of preparing, taking part and hopefully completing the course is something so satisfying and something I am really proud of.” - #RolexFastnetRace . . . #yachting #yachts #superyachts #yachtrace #ocean #waves #water #sail #sailing #sea #sun #fastnetrace #yachtphotography #buildyourownboat #woodenboats #woodyboater #classicboat #woodboat #boat #rivayacht #vintageboat #boatinglife #luxurytender #rivaaquarama

2017 #RolexFastnetRace winners are back to defend the title! 🏆 - Didier Gaudoux is back for more with his winning JND 39 Lann Ael 2. After sailing a near-perfect race in 2017 he and his mostly Corinthian crew will be hoping for another set of perfect conditions for their yacht. - A lifelong sailor who did his first RORC races in 1978 Didier mentioned that the yacht had been designed with the Fastnet in mind. “You have to be a bit lucky with the weather to win but I am very proud to have designed a boat with Bernard Nivelt to win the Fastnet.” - © Rolex/Kurt Arrigo/ELWJ

Doublehanders on the rise! - Perhaps it is because people are becoming increasingly time poor, or because it neatly side-steps the problem of keeping a large crew together, but one area of offshore racing undeniably gaining popularity is doublehanding. - This unique discipline of our sport has been recognised by World Sailing with the announcement that a ‘Mixed Two Person Keelboat Offshore’ event will be introduced to the Olympics for Paris 2024. - Over the last few editions of the Rolex Fastnet Race, the IRC Two Handed class has shown steady growth from 45 entries in 2013 to 53 in 2015 and 57 in in the last race. At the time of writing, 63 doublehanded competitors were entered this year. - The range of boat performance in IRC Two Handed spans James Heald's Swan 45 Nemesis (although the longest boat is American Mark Stevens’ Hinckley 51 Kiva, a recent arrival in the Transatlantic Race 2019), down to Will Sayer's Sigma 33 Elmarleen. In between there are Sun Fast 3200s and 3600s, JPK 10.10s and 10.80s plus J/122s, J/109s and J/105s and A-35s plus, among others, Sigmas, Swans, Figaro IIs and Figaro 3s. - Pictured, Dutch two handed champions, Robin Verhoef and John van der Starre will return to the Rolex Fastnet Race on J/122 Ajeto! - 📸 © Paul Wyeth/pwpictures.com . . . #yachtdesign #sailor #sail #superyachts #yachtclub #design #oceans #luxuryyachts #theneedles #sailing #beach #yachtbroker #cowesiow #instasailing #yachtphotography #fastnet #fastnetrace #rolexfastnetrace #isleofwight #boatshow #instasea #classicyacht #imoca #marina #yachtstyle #yachtweek #sailingstagram #sailors #class40

Scarlet Celebrations in St Malo! 🏆 - Ross Applebey's Oyster 48 Scarlet Oyster has won the Royal Ocean Racing Club Cowes-Dinard-St Malo Race, having scored the best corrected time of the 170 yachts racing under IRC. In all 185 yachts raced to St Malo from 20 different countries. The largest fleet for a RORC race since the 2017 Rolex Fastnet Race. - My wife Sarah is expecting our first baby in two weeks, and was not on board, but she started getting some sensations back home, which was a bit of an incentive to sail faster! However, all is well, and the baby hasn't been born yet!” - “Coming out of the Solent we went over the Shingles Bank, I am not sure if it worked tactically, but the strategy put us in a clear lane, avoiding the dirt from the huge fleet. The wind did go aft during the race which really suited Scarlet Oyster, as we could pole back, while the asymmetric boats had to sail a lot more miles. Pintia showed us the way leaving the Channel Islands, with some favourable tide we were very fast towards St Malo. The final icing on the cake was the tide turning foul just after we finished. Our best result in previous races to St Malo has been third in class. To win overall, against very good opposition, is a real thrill. Jules White did a great job, allowing me to concentrate more on tactics, and Jules will be the skipper for the Rolex Fastnet Race, as our baby should have arrived before the race start.” - skipper Ross Applebey. - #rorcracing
